Saudi Arabia Calls For Enhanced Global Cooperation In Water Management Ahead Of World Water Forum
The kickoff meeting for the 11th World Water Forum began in Riyadh, marking a historic first for the Middle East. This event has gathered numerous experts to discuss global water issues and plan for Saudi Arabia's hosting of the main forum in 2027. The Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Abdulrahman Alfadley, alongside World Water Council President Loïc Fauchon, unveiled the forum's official logo.
Minister Alfadley highlighted Saudi Arabia’s dedication to international cooperation in tackling water challenges. He stressed the importance of universal access to water and sanitation services as essential for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6). "Saudi Arabia prioritizes the water sector through various measures," he stated, referring to a national strategy that covers production, storage, transportation, distribution, treatment, and reuse.

The Kingdom has implemented Integrated Water Resources Management and improved supply chain governance. A long-term supply and demand plan extending to 2050 supports these efforts. This aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's environmental, social, and economic goals. The Global Water Organization was launched to promote international collaboration, along with an International Water Research Center focusing on water economics and security.
Loïc Fauchon of the World Water Council emphasized making water a global priority. He noted that this gathering will set the stage for future policies. "The way ahead is still long, but we are confident we’re on the right path toward real solutions—solutions that can change lives," he remarked. The council has worked with Saudi authorities to create a framework for the forum's thematic and regional components.
Deputy Minister Dr. Abdulaziz Alshaibani highlighted the urgency of addressing water issues now. He described the meeting as a call for immediate action to build on existing progress in the sector. Alshaibani stressed coherence across all sectors and unifying efforts to achieve tangible solutions for global water challenges and SDG 6.
Key Pillars for Effective Solutions
Alshaibani outlined key pillars necessary for effective solutions: financing, innovation, diplomacy, and environmental considerations. These elements are crucial in developing strategies that address pressing water concerns worldwide. The World Water Forum 2027 serves as an important platform for exchanging ideas on water management practices globally.
The forum aims to foster dialogue among nations and organizations about sustainable water management practices. By hosting this event in Saudi Arabia, it highlights the region's commitment to addressing critical water issues on an international scale.
