Saudi Arabia Urges Global Participation In COP16 Riyadh To Address Land Degradation Challenges
Saudi Arabia has highlighted the urgent need for enhanced global cooperation to tackle pressing environmental issues. The Kingdom is advocating for increased efforts to combat land degradation and mitigate drought impacts. This call was made by Eng. Abdulrahman AlFadley, Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, during "The Road to Riyadh" session at the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York City.
The session was attended by key Saudi figures, including Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Princess Reema Bandar Al-Saud, Adel Al-Jubeir, and Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel. The event aimed to build momentum for the upcoming UNCCD COP16 in Riyadh, focusing on addressing land degradation and drought's social, environmental, and economic impacts.

AlFadley emphasized that COP16 in Riyadh could be a pivotal moment for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). He urged the international community to actively engage in COP16 to enhance environmental preservation and sustainability. "We hope COP16 in Riyadh will mark a turning point in the path of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification," he stated.
Saudi Arabia's commitment includes initiatives like the Saudi Green Initiative and Middle East Green Initiative. These efforts aim to protect the environment locally and globally. The Kingdom also launched the Global Initiative on Reducing Land Degradation during its G20 presidency.
