Saudi Arabia Advances Global Efforts For Land Degradation Neutrality, Says NCVC CEO Dr. Khaled Alabdulkader
The Saudi Green Initiative Forum's fourth edition commenced with Dr. Khaled Alabdulkader, CEO of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, emphasising Saudi Arabia's ambitious afforestation goals. Over 120 entities have collaborated to plant more than 100 million trees so far. This event aligns with the Kingdom hosting the 16th Conference of the Parties to the UNCCD (COP16).
Dr. Alabdulkader highlighted that land restoration is crucial for adapting to climate change, reducing carbon emissions, mitigating drought, and enhancing food security. He noted that combating desertification requires a comprehensive strategy beyond just planting trees. The National Greening Program aims to foster natural vegetation growth in pastures and parks.

Saudi Arabia is leading efforts at COP16 to promote joint initiatives for land restoration. The Kingdom aims to achieve land degradation neutrality by keeping pace with global standards. The Saudi Green Initiative targets planting 10 billion trees nationwide, equating to rehabilitating 40 million hectares of land.
Modern technology plays a significant role in these efforts. Advanced systems monitor desert encroachment on vegetation, while geographic information systems help identify optimal cultivation areas. These technologies ensure effective implementation of afforestation strategies across the country.
The Kingdom's presidency at COP16 underscores its commitment to environmental sustainability. By fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, Saudi Arabia seeks to address pressing environmental challenges and contribute positively to global ecological health.
Dr. Alabdulkader reiterated that achieving these goals requires collective action and innovative approaches. The integration of modern technology with traditional practices forms a robust framework for sustainable development in the region.
This initiative reflects Saudi Arabia's dedication to environmental conservation and its proactive stance in addressing climate-related issues. By setting ambitious targets and leveraging advanced technologies, the Kingdom aims to make significant strides in ecological restoration and sustainability.
