Saudi Arabia Advocates For Global Drought Solutions Through Innovation And International Collaboration
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, leading the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16), has emphasised innovation and global cooperation as key to addressing drought. This was highlighted at a high-level event in Seville, Spain, during the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4).
Dr. Osama Faqeeha, Deputy Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture for Environmental Affairs and Advisor to the COP16 President, stressed that combating drought requires a collective effort. He noted that innovative financing, coordinated institutions, and proactive planning are essential. "Effective partnerships like the one between IDRA and the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership are crucial for connecting policy with financial tools to achieve sustainable, long-term adaptation," he stated.

Several financial institutions were involved in discussions about enhancing funding for drought resilience projects. The OPEC Fund for International Development, Islamic Development Bank, European Investment Bank, and Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) shared strategies. They aim to increase partnerships with governments and private sectors while ensuring investments have tangible impacts.
The event titled "Unlocking Innovation and Cooperation to Build Drought Resilience" was part of the International Drought Resilience Alliance (IDRA) initiative. This initiative includes 70 countries along with the Riyadh Global Partnership. It brought together ministers, development funds, and multilateral financial institutions to discuss these critical issues.
The participation of Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture highlights its dedication to supporting global climate change adaptation plans. Through its leadership at COP16, Saudi Arabia aims to enhance integration among international initiatives and expand institutional reach. This aligns with the objectives of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
Flexible funding and broad institutional partnerships are being promoted by Saudi Arabia's leadership at COP16. These efforts aim to build stronger resilience in regions most affected by climate change impacts. The focus is on fostering greater collaboration among international entities.
The session underscored that tackling drought effectively requires a multilateral coalition rather than isolated efforts. The emphasis is on combining innovative financing with coordinated institutional efforts for better outcomes.
The Kingdom's broader commitment through its leadership at COP16 is evident in its support for global climate change adaptation plans. This involves fostering greater integration among international initiatives and furthering UNCCD objectives.
