Saudi Arabia Achieves Significant Progress In Water Resource Management, Setting Global Standards

Saudi Arabia's Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) index has seen a significant rise, moving from 57% to 83%. This progress is among the fastest globally. The United Nations has acknowledged Saudi Arabia as a model for advancing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) six. Eng. Mansour Al-Mushaiti, Vice Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, shared this achievement during the 8th Cairo Water Week.

The Kingdom is committed to sustainable water management in line with Saudi Vision 2030. Efforts include restructuring the water sector, fostering competitive legislation, and promoting transparency. Private sector involvement is also encouraged to enhance efficiency and innovation. These initiatives aim to ensure sustainable water resources for future generations.

Saudi Arabia Sets New Standards in Water Management

The Saudi Water Partnership Company oversees a substantial portfolio valued at over SAR47 billion. It produces nearly 10 million cubic meters of desalinated water daily, alongside 600,000 cubic meters of treated wastewater. Modern technologies have improved efficiency by 70% while reducing costs by half, showcasing the Kingdom's commitment to innovation in water management.

Al-Mushaiti highlighted several challenges facing the water sector, such as climate change, population growth, and diminishing groundwater reserves. He emphasized the need for integrated water management and modern technologies to address these issues effectively. Transparent governance throughout the water service chain is crucial for sustainable solutions.

Environmentally friendly projects that use renewable energy are vital for sustainable water production. The Kingdom continues investing in green solutions and encourages discussions on water issues through platforms like the one initiated during its G20 Summit presidency in 2020.

Future Initiatives

Saudi Arabia is transforming water challenges into opportunities through initiatives like Saudi Water Week and the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water. These efforts aim to promote prosperity by addressing global water challenges with innovative solutions.

Eng. Al-Mushaiti invited participation in the 11th World Water Forum scheduled for Riyadh in 2027. This event will serve as a key platform for addressing global water challenges and promoting sustainable solutions for future generations.
