Saudi Arabia Emerges As A Global Leader In AI Innovation According To SDAIA Report

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI), driven by its Vision 2030. The "State of AI in Saudi Arabia" report, released by the Saudi Data & AI Authority (SDAIA) in September 2024, highlights this progress. Established in 2019, SDAIA is crucial to advancing the national AI agenda under King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Saudi Arabia's achievements in AI are evident through its top ranking in government strategy for AI, according to the 2023 Global AI Index by Tortoise. The SDAIA's Elevate AI training program was recognized with a certificate of excellence at the ITU WSIS Forum 2024. Additionally, the National Data Bank and Estishraf platform received accolades for promoting ICTs for development.

Saudi Arabia Leads in Global AI Innovation

In terms of infrastructure, Saudi Arabia ranked second in the Middle East for colocation data centers, with 22 active and 40 under development by 2023. The Kingdom also boasts 10 supercomputers, eight of which rank among the world's top 500 as of 2024. The public cloud services market saw a significant growth of 30% in 2023 compared to the previous year.

Investment in emerging technologies, including AI, has been robust. Government spending on these technologies grew at a compound annual rate of 59% from 2019 to 2023. Crunchbase data shows that Saudi AI companies attracted $1.7 billion in funding by 2023.

SDAIA has been proactive in establishing a regulatory framework for AI and data management. By 2024, it issued 14 regulations and policies related to these areas and set up 245 data management offices within the public sector. These efforts aim to ensure ethical and responsible use of AI technologies.

The Kingdom joined the UN AI Advisory Body in 2023 to promote governed and ethical use of AI globally. This move underscores its commitment to responsible innovation and international collaboration in technology.

Education and Talent Development

Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in education to build a skilled workforce for its growing AI sector. According to Ministry of Education data from 2023, 86% of universities offer bachelor's programs related to AI, with specialized programs available at 42% of institutions. From 2019 to 2023, over 38,000 graduates earned degrees related to computer science and AI.

The growth rate of professionals skilled in AI increased by an impressive annual rate of 51% between 2018 and 2022, based on LinkedIn data. This reflects the Kingdom's focus on developing human capabilities and empowering talent within the field.

Research and Innovation

The Kingdom's dedication to research has led to significant advancements in scientific publications related to AI. Between 2019 and 2023, there was a remarkable annual growth rate of 45% in such publications according to OECD data. Additionally, there was a notable increase in patents related to AI during this period as reported by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property.

SDAIA's Readiness and Adoption Survey from 2024 revealed that nearly four out of ten government entities are either using or experimenting with AI technologies. Among these entities, a substantial majority reported improvements in service delivery due to implementing these innovations.

Public Awareness

A survey conducted by SDAIA in 2024 showed that public awareness about AI has grown significantly across Saudi Arabia. Approximately three-quarters of the population are familiar with what artificial intelligence entails while nearly two-thirds understand its applications within various sectors.

This increased awareness aligns with efforts made towards enhancing knowledge about artificial intelligence among citizens through educational initiatives aimed at fostering greater understanding about this transformative technology across society.
