Saudi Arabia Launches Future Mobility Sandbox To Advance Transport Testing And Innovation

The Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services, in collaboration with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, has introduced the "Future Mobility Sandbox" initiative. This project spans 1.56 square kilometres within the KAUST campus. It is a pivotal move to enhance Saudi Arabia's transport sector on a global scale, offering a platform for testing cutting-edge innovations in land, air, and sea transport.

The initiative aims to align with Saudi Arabia’s transport and logistics priorities by attracting international investments and innovations. It focuses on advancing autonomous, sustainable, and smart transport solutions by providing a secure testing environment. The project is expected to generate employment opportunities, boost economic growth, improve traffic safety, and lower vehicle-related accidents.

Saudi Arabia's Future Mobility Sandbox Initiative

Saleh Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistic Services, highlighted that this ambitious initiative will bolster strategic partnerships with KAUST. It introduces the region’s first integrated testbed for various transport modes. The minister stated it aims to create an environment conducive to testing advanced ideas using research capabilities in data science, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and autonomous systems.

The "Future Mobility Sandbox" serves as a multimodal testing platform designed to accelerate innovation across land, air, and sea transport sectors. It facilitates the testing of autonomous vehicles, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, drones for logistics, maritime technologies, artificial intelligence applications, big data analytics, and advanced propulsion systems.

During the project's launch event, both ministries announced their collaboration under a national initiative aimed at supporting infrastructure development for vehicle manufacturing as well as transport and logistics sectors. This initiative seeks to enhance technical capabilities while localising advanced technologies. It also aims to attract significant investments to build a modern industry led by Saudi national talents.

The implementation will occur in several phases. Initially focusing on infrastructure development and technology enhancement followed by attracting key partners. Full completion is anticipated by 2029 which marks an important milestone in Saudi Arabia’s journey towards future transportation innovation.

Minister Al-Jasser emphasised that this project supports the development of future transport solutions while reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s position as a global hub for innovation in modern mobility. This aligns with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy.

This comprehensive approach ensures an integrated environment supporting the latest sensor technologies along with communication systems necessary for safety testing across various modes of transportation.
