Saudi Film Commission Slashes Cinema Licensing Fees And Ticket Prices

The Film Commission has recently announced a pivotal move aimed at rejuvenating the cinema industry within Saudi Arabia. This initiative, led by the Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan and endorsed by the Film Commission Board of Directors, focuses on reducing licensing fees and movie ticket prices to foster growth, enhance audience engagement, and establish Saudi Arabia as a regional leader in filmmaking excellence.

Key to this strategy is the simplification of the licensing process. The commission has lowered fees for a range of cinema operations, including those for permanent and temporary cinemas, as well as cinemas catering to special needs. Through the Cultural Licenses Platform (Abde'a), applicants can now easily secure licenses for various activities such as operating a studio, producing visual and audio content, distributing or importing cinematographic films, and obtaining no-objection licenses for cinematography.

Cinema Fees Cut in Saudi Arabia

In an effort to draw more visitors to cinemas across the Kingdom, cinema operators are being encouraged to offer discounts and promotions. This approach is expected not only to increase the number of cinema halls but also to make Saudi films more accessible and encourage a larger audience to enjoy cinematic experiences. These measures align with the Film Commission's broader goals of expanding the film industry's economic impact, supporting cultural and creative diversity in cinema, fostering a competitive environment for investment, and enhancing the public's cinematic experience.

Eng. Abdullah Al-Qahtani, CEO of the Film Commission, emphasized the commission's commitment to invigorating the film industry. "We are working to stimulate the film industry by encouraging private sector companies operating cinemas in the Kingdom to provide discounts and promotional offers to cinema viewership," he stated. Al-Qahtani further highlighted efforts to boost the presence of Saudi films in cinemas and noted that aligning licensing fees and ticket prices with international averages would support sector growth and sustainability.

The Film Commission's strategic objectives include developing infrastructure and regulatory frameworks, encouraging finance and investment in the sector, ensuring access to local talent, stimulating local production, and attracting global filmmakers. This comprehensive approach aims to solidify Saudi Arabia's position as a leading regional center for the film industry.
