Saudi Arabia Honoured With FAO Technical Recognition Award For Innovative Saudi Reef Program

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been honoured with the Technical Recognition Award by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. This accolade was given for "South-South and Triangular Cooperation" in the Projects Championing category. The award highlights the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program, known as Saudi Reef, which is acknowledged as the largest agricultural development initiative globally.

The recognition was accepted by Abdulrahman Alfadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, on behalf of Saudi Arabia. The award ceremony took place in Rome during the 80th anniversary celebration of the FAO. This event also coincided with the fifth annual World Food Forum, held from October 10 to 17.

Eng. Alfadley remarked that this award signifies Saudi Arabia's leadership in advancing rural agriculture and its successful collaboration with the FAO. He stated, "The recognition showcases Saudi Arabia’s successful model for sustainable agricultural development at the local, regional, and global levels." He further noted that these achievements align with Saudi Vision 2030's objectives to boost food security, rural development, and environmental sustainability.

Over the past five years, the Saudi Reef Program has achieved remarkable success. It has empowered more than 80,000 beneficiaries nationwide by providing over SAR3 billion in direct financial assistance across its eight sectors. This investment has significantly enhanced the economy by increasing farmers' incomes and generating over 70,000 jobs both directly and indirectly.

The program's impact on production is notable as well. It has facilitated the planting of more than 15 million agricultural seedlings and supported the production of approximately 250 million kilograms of agricultural goods. These efforts have contributed to strengthening food security and improving agri-food systems in Saudi Arabia.

This recognition underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to building international partnerships and promoting sustainable agricultural practices worldwide. The achievements of the Saudi Reef Program reflect a successful model that can be emulated by other nations seeking to enhance their agricultural sectors.
