Saudi Arabia Marks Founding Day By Honoring Falconry Heritage
The falcon holds a place of honor within the cultural landscape of Saudi Arabia, symbolizing strength, courage, and nobility for centuries. This revered bird not only embodies the rich heritage of the Kingdom but also plays a pivotal role in its economy and societal identity. The bond between Saudis and falcons stretches back to the inception of the first Saudi state three centuries ago, where falcons were emblematic of peace in tribal resolutions and esteemed as gifts among leaders.
The visual identity of the Saudi Founding Day notably incorporates the falcon, alongside other significant symbols such as the Saudi flag, the palm tree, the Arabian horse, and the market. Beyond its emblematic value, falconry has historically contributed to the economy through hunting, fostering a sense of community and shared identity among Saudis.

In a move to preserve and enhance this cultural and economic asset, the Saudi government established the Saudi Falcons Club in 2017 under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud. The club's mission is to bring together falconers across the Kingdom, advocate for responsible falconry practices, and support sustainable falcon breeding and conservation efforts.
The club's calendar is filled with events and competitions that draw global participation. The King Abdulaziz Falconry Festival stands out as the world's largest falconry competition, having been recognized by the Guinness World Records for its number of participating falcons on three occasions. Other significant events include the AlUla Falcon Cup, noted for its substantial award value, and the International Saudi Falcons and Hunting Exhibition.
Through these initiatives, the Saudi Falcons Club not only aims to promote falconry as a sustainable sport but also strives to position Saudi Arabia as an international frontrunner in this field. This commitment was further acknowledged when the Kingdom was added to UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021 for "Falconry, a living human heritage."
This recognition underscores the global significance of falconry within Saudi Arabia's cultural heritage, highlighting its historical importance and ongoing efforts to preserve this unique tradition for future generations.
