Saudi Arabia's Bold Steps Towards Achieving Environmental Sustainability Goals
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has embarked on a significant journey towards environmental sustainability, aligning its strategies with the ambitious Vision 2030. This initiative encompasses a broad spectrum of regional and global efforts aimed at preserving natural resources, combating climate change, and enhancing the quality of life for both present and future generations. A pivotal moment in this journey was in 2016 when the Ministry of Agriculture evolved into the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, marking a strategic shift towards environmental priorities.
Several foundational achievements have been instrumental in paving the way for Saudi Arabia's environmental progress. The National Environment Strategy has provided a comprehensive roadmap for the Kingdom's environmental development efforts. Additionally, the establishment of the Prince Sultan Institute for Environmental, Water and Desert Research has been crucial in supporting scientific research in these critical areas. The Research Fund for Energy and Environment further underscores the Kingdom's commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions and environmental protection.

A landmark $1.1 billion environmental reconstruction project was undertaken post-Gulf War to address war-related environmental damages, showcasing Saudi Arabia's dedication to environmental restoration. To ensure the sustainable implementation of its environmental initiatives, the Kingdom established the Environment Fund and the Special Forces for Environmental Security. Moreover, five specialized centers have been set up to focus on meteorology, vegetation development, environmental compliance, wildlife conservation, and waste management.
Under the leadership of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, a council for royal reserves was established through a Royal Decree. These reserves are critical for preserving ecosystems, supporting local communities, and fostering ecotourism development.
Saudi Arabia has also positioned itself as a leader in the global green movement through two pivotal initiatives: the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative. These initiatives aim to plant 10 billion trees, rehabilitate degraded lands, expand protected areas, and address regional environmental challenges. Vision 2030 further envisions transforming Saudi cities into green, smart spaces that promote healthy lifestyles.
The National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification is making notable progress towards achieving the goals set by the Saudi Green Initiative. It has outlined seven key targets that include revitalizing 300,000 hectares of degraded forests and rehabilitating eight million hectares of pastureland across 26 locations in the Kingdom. The center also plans to plant 10 million trees in national parks to reduce carbon emissions by four million tons and combat desertification.
In collaboration with royal reserves, an additional seven million native trees will be planted to further reduce carbon emissions by over two million tons. A significant emphasis is placed on encouraging private sector participation with a goal to plant and protect 40 million trees in private areas over ten years. This effort is expected to contribute significantly to carbon emission reduction by 16 million tons.
The public sector is not left behind in this green revolution; plans are underway to plant and protect 18 million local trees in public areas over a decade, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by over seven million tons. The long-term vision encompasses planting 10 billion trees across the Kingdom in the coming decades to rehabilitate 40 million hectares of degraded land. This ambitious plan aims to increase vegetation cover, improve quality of life, create habitats for endangered species, and mitigate climate change effects.
Through these comprehensive steps, Saudi Arabia is not only asserting its leadership in environmental sustainability but also contributing significantly to global efforts against climate change. The Kingdom's initiatives reflect a deep commitment to creating a sustainable future for its citizens and the wider region.
