Saudi Arabia's Unprecedented Strides In Environmental Conservation Unveiled

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has made significant strides in environmental conservation, as highlighted by Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Eng. Abdulrahman Abdulmohsen AlFadley. Speaking at the 10th International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) Regional Conservation Forum in Riyadh, AlFadley emphasised the Kingdom's achievements on local, regional, and international levels.

Saudi Arabia has implemented a comprehensive National Environment Strategy to guide its environmental efforts. This strategy includes various initiatives introduced during the G20 Riyadh Summit aimed at preserving biodiversity and preventing land degradation. The minister also mentioned the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, which focus on combating overgrazing and other environmental challenges.

AlFadley noted that these initiatives reflect a vision to protect 30% of the Kingdom's terrestrial and marine areas by 2030. The integrated institutional framework supporting this vision includes a national strategy, implementing regulations, and specialised centres focused on wildlife, meteorology, desertification control, waste management, and vegetation cover.

The IUCN West Asia Regional Conservation Forum is organised every four years by IUCN ROWA member states. It serves as a platform for discussing common environmental challenges and developing effective conservation strategies. The forum also hosts workshops and seminars to enhance environmental awareness and train individuals on best practices.

AlFadley highlighted that hosting the IUCN forum underscores Saudi Arabia's leading role in environmental conservation. Additionally, the Kingdom will host the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) next December. This event aims to enhance international cooperation to find solutions for land degradation and drought effects.

Comprehensive Vision for Sustainable Development

The minister stressed that Saudi Arabia's environmental progress stems from a national vision positioning the environmental sector as crucial for sustainable development. He stated that "the environmental system within the Kingdom works harmoniously to achieve national, regional, and international targets within an integrated institutional framework." This framework includes an environmental fund to support various initiatives.

During his participation in a panel discussion at the forum, AlFadley said: "The Kingdom has achieved environmental milestones at local, regional, and international levels." He added that these achievements are part of a broader effort to conserve nature and accelerate research for global coral reefs.

The forum provides an opportunity for member states to exchange expertise and develop effective strategies for nature conservation. It also aims to establish policies that address common environmental challenges faced by countries in West Asia.
