Saudi Arabia Unveils Innovative Environmental Initiatives At ChangeNOW Summit 2025
Saudi Arabia has introduced several environmental initiatives at the COP16 conference, showcasing its leadership in sustainability. These initiatives include the Sand and Dust Storm Monitoring Initiative and the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership, which supports 80 countries. The Business for Land (B4L) initiative aims to boost private sector involvement in land conservation.
The Kingdom's efforts build on previous initiatives from its 2020 G20 Summit presidency, such as the Middle East Green Initiative. This ambitious plan seeks to plant 50 billion trees across the region over the coming decades. Saudi Arabia continues to lead climate challenge solutions with these efforts.

During COP16, Saudi Arabia launched the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership with international stakeholders. This collaboration involves the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and other global partners. The Kingdom also introduced the International Drought Resilience Observatory and World Drought Atlas to enhance drought monitoring and prevention.
Saudi Arabia's participation in the ChangeNOW Summit 2025 in Paris highlights its commitment to environmental initiatives. As president of COP16, representing 197 states parties, it uses this platform to promote nature-based solutions and attract investment. The focus is on preserving ecosystems and combating land degradation, desertification, and drought.
Over its two-year COP16 presidency, Saudi Arabia will emphasize cooperation among countries, private sectors, financial institutions, international organizations, NGOs, and civil society. Key issues include land degradation, drought, migration, dust storms, and enhancing women's and youth roles.
The Middle East Green Initiative's first ministerial council session established a regional alliance addressing climate change impacts in MENA. Comprising over 29 countries and organizations, this council approved secretariat structures and policies while appointing a fund trustee.
Goals for Environmental Impact
The Middle East Green Initiative targets planting 50 billion trees and restoring 200 million hectares of degraded land. It aims for a 2.5% reduction in global carbon dioxide emissions through these efforts. Saudi Arabia remains committed to advancing these goals during its COP16 presidency.
The Kingdom's strategic focus on sustainability demonstrates its dedication to addressing environmental challenges globally. By fostering international partnerships and implementing innovative solutions, Saudi Arabia aims to make significant progress in combating climate change.
