Saudi Environmental Initiatives Bolster Global Resilience, Minister Alfadley Highlights
At the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) held in Nairobi, Kenya, Eng. Abdulrahman Alfadley, Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, showcased Saudi Arabia's proactive measures in enhancing environmental resilience. The assembly served as a platform for global leaders to discuss and strategize on overcoming environmental challenges.
Eng. Alfadley underscored Saudi Arabia's comprehensive environmental strategy, which prioritizes the preservation of biodiversity and the natural environment. He detailed the kingdom's efforts through the implementation of national legislation, strategies, and plans aimed at bolstering environmental protection and sustainability. Among these initiatives are the Saudi and Middle East Green Initiatives, reflecting the country's dedication to ecological conservation.

The minister also highlighted Saudi Arabia's leadership in launching the Reducing Land Degradation and Enhancing Conservation of Terrestrial Habitats Initiative. This initiative underscores the kingdom's commitment to global environmental engagement. Furthermore, Eng. Alfadley mentioned the establishment of the Global Water Organization by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This organization aims to foster international collaboration in water conservation.
Eng. Alfadley announced that Saudi Arabia will be hosting significant environmental events, including the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16) and World Environment Day 2024. These events are part of the kingdom's efforts to address pressing environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution—key themes discussed during the Nairobi session.
He called for enhanced coordination among global leaders to explore effective solutions and achieve sustainability goals. Eng. Alfadley emphasized that achieving these objectives is vital for tackling environmental challenges and ensuring societal well-being.
