Saudi Arabia Highlights Importance Of Integration And Expertise Sharing For Water Sustainability Among OIC Nations
Saudi Arabia has highlighted the need to enhance efforts in managing water resources and infrastructure during the fifth session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Conference of Ministers Responsible for Water. The conference, themed "From Vision to Impact," focused on transitioning from planning to achieving measurable outcomes that improve water security and sustainable development among OIC members.
Minister Abdulrahman Alfadley stressed that water security is crucial for sustainable development and public health. He noted that challenges like population growth, climate change, and water scarcity are putting pressure on OIC countries. To tackle these issues, he called for improved water efficiency, infrastructure development, and funding for resource management.

The minister praised the Islamic Development Bank and other financial institutions for their support in implementing the OIC's 2012 vision. He also acknowledged achievements from the fourth session in Cairo in 2018 and the 2025 Program of Action adopted by the 13th Islamic Summit Conference in Istanbul. Alfadley emphasized that the conference signifies a collective commitment to preserving water for future generations.
Alfadley outlined Saudi Arabia's integrated solutions for water management, which include a comprehensive national strategy, legislative frameworks like the Water Law, and climate change mitigation efforts. These initiatives have been recognized by the United Nations in its report on Integrated Water Resources Management launched in New York.
The minister also highlighted Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's announcement to establish the Global Water Organization (GWO) in Riyadh. This international platform aims to mobilize efforts to address water challenges globally. Alfadley encouraged countries to join this initiative.
Future Plans and International Collaboration
Continuing its global role, Saudi Arabia will host the 11th World Water Forum in Riyadh in 2027. Alfadley invited all member states and partners to contribute actively towards creating a shared vision and practical steps for addressing global water challenges.
OIC Assistant Secretary-General Ambassador Samir Bakr reiterated the organization's commitment to enhancing water security, sustainable management, and climate adaptation. He commended Saudi Arabia's leadership in fostering global collaboration through initiatives like the GWO.
Addressing Regional Challenges
Ambassador Bakr also drew attention to severe water scarcity issues affecting Gaza and Palestine. He urged increased humanitarian efforts to ensure access to safe drinking water and sanitation services amid damaged infrastructure.
The conference underscored a shared dedication among OIC members to tackle pressing water-related challenges through collaboration and innovative solutions. By focusing on tangible outcomes, member states aim to secure a sustainable future for their populations.
