Saudi Arabia's SFDA Elected As Vice Chair Of Codex Alimentarius Commission For Global Food Standards

Saudi Arabia, through the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), has been chosen as the Vice Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission for a one-year term. This decision was made during the 47th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC47) in Geneva, where Saudi Arabia received the most votes from member countries.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission, established in 1963, is tasked with creating food standards to protect consumer health and enhance international food trade. It consists of 189 members and operates under the joint auspices of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Saudi Arabia Takes Vice Chair Role at Codex

Dr. Hisham Saad Aljadhey, Chief Executive of SFDA, expressed pride in this achievement. He noted that it reflects the support and empowerment from leadership that has elevated Saudi Arabia to global prominence. This accomplishment aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which focuses on enhancing the Kingdom’s international leadership.

Aljadhey emphasized SFDA's commitment to strengthening its global role by developing systems and standards while adhering to international food safety regulations. These efforts aim to improve nutritional quality, promote greater trade flexibility worldwide, and contribute to advancing public health and sustainable development globally.

Khaled Al-Zahrani, who has served as the Regional Coordinator for Near East Countries at Codex since 2021, was re-elected in 2023. He will now assume the position of vice chairperson of this global body responsible for setting food standards.

This election underscores Saudi Arabia's growing influence in international food safety and trade arenas. The Kingdom's active participation in such global platforms highlights its dedication to contributing positively to worldwide health and trade practices.
