The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) announced a significant development during a high-level meeting in Beijing, China. Dr. Nasser Abaalkhail, Saudi Arabia's Deputy for International Collaboration of the Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority, was unanimously elected as president of the Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Agencies (GlobE Network) for 2025-2027.

This election underscores Saudi Arabia's leadership in global anti-corruption efforts. It highlights the international community's trust in Saudi Arabia's dedication to fighting transnational corruption. The network aims to reduce safe havens for corrupt individuals and their assets while developing tools to tackle evolving corruption patterns.

Saudi Arabia Leads GlobE Network Against Corruption

The GlobE Network was initiated by Saudi Arabia during the G20 Summit ministerial meeting in 2020. It gained official recognition by the UN at the ninth session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption in Egypt. This initiative has been instrumental in fostering international cooperation against corruption.

UN Secretary General António Guterres praised Saudi Arabia's efforts in establishing this network. During his speech at the first UN General Assembly special session against corruption in 2021, he acknowledged the Kingdom's pivotal role. The initiative has since garnered widespread support from numerous countries and organizations worldwide.

In recent years, over 219 anti-corruption agencies and international organizations from more than 120 countries have joined the GlobE Network. This broad participation demonstrates the initiative's success and its importance on a global scale. The network continues to expand its reach and influence across various regions.

Spain was appointed as chair of the network's Steering Committee, with Saudi Arabia serving as vice chair. This collaboration between nations further strengthens the network's capacity to address corruption effectively and efficiently on an international level.

The election of Dr. Nasser Abaalkhail as president reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to leading global anti-corruption initiatives. His leadership is expected to enhance the network's effectiveness in combating corruption worldwide, ensuring that corrupt individuals find fewer places to hide their illicit gains.
