Saudi Arabia Takes Leadership Role In WIPO Assemblies And Committees For Intellectual Property Governance
The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) recently took part in the 66th session of the WIPO General Assembly in Geneva. During this event, Saudi Arabia was chosen to lead several international assemblies and committees. This achievement underscores the Kingdom's prominent role and the global community's trust in its active involvement in intellectual property matters.
Eng. Sami bin Ali Al-Sudais, Deputy CEO of Corporate Affairs at SAIP, was appointed as Chair of the Berne Union Assembly. This assembly is responsible for safeguarding literary and artistic works, enabling creators to manage how their creations are used and under what conditions. Additionally, Fawaz bin Essa Almuballi, Deputy CEO of Corporate Resources, was named Chair of the Nice Union Assembly. This assembly manages the international trademark classification system, serving as a unified reference for all member states.

Hesham bin Saad Alarifi, Executive Director for Partnerships and International Relations, assumed the role of Chair of the Berne Union Executive Committee. This committee is crucial within WIPO's framework, ensuring member states adhere to the Berne Convention for protecting literary and artistic works. Meanwhile, Mizael Alharbi, Executive Director for Patents, was elected Vice Chair of the International Patent Classification Union Assembly. This assembly focuses on updating the international patent classification system to align with technological advancements.
Saudi Arabia continues its active participation by being elected as a member of the Coordination Committee. This committee plays a vital role in appointing the next director-general and overseeing strategic efforts to enhance governance and effectiveness within WIPO. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia was re-elected to the Program and Budget Committee. This committee addresses programmatic, budgetary, premises-related, and financial matters within WIPO.
The election of Saudi Arabia to these significant roles bolsters its status as a reliable global partner in shaping international intellectual property policies. It also supports its ambition to become a global hub for innovation and creativity.
