Saudi Arabia Unveils Digital Initiatives To Enhance Livestock Health And Food Security At WSIS+20
The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA) in Saudi Arabia introduced seven digital initiatives at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20) High-Level Event in Geneva. These initiatives aim to improve livestock health, water sustainability, and food security. The event took place from July 7-11, 2025, showcasing Saudi Arabia's commitment to digital innovation.
Dr. Abdulhamid Aleliwi, General Supervisor at MEWA's Information Technology and Digital Transformation Agency, presented these initiatives. His presentation was titled "MEWA Innovative Initiatives Leveraging Emerging Technology and Artificial Intelligence." It highlighted the ministry's efforts in using AI for various sectors.

A key feature of the presentation was the AI-powered Livestock Health AI Platform. This platform recently received the Certificate of Excellence at the WSIS 2025 Awards. It underscores Saudi Arabia's dedication to using artificial intelligence for veterinary care and livestock management.
Another significant initiative is the Smart Platform for Monitoring Water Resources. This platform provides comprehensive monitoring to help conserve groundwater reserves in Saudi Arabia. It reflects the Kingdom's focus on sustainable water management practices.
The presentation also included the Smart Monitoring of Slaughterhouses and Public Benefit Markets. This initiative demonstrates an integrated approach to ensuring food security and protecting public health in Saudi Arabia.
A notable aspect of MEWA's efforts is its collaboration with the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA). Dr. Aleliwi discussed their joint work to establish the AI Center for Environment, Water, and Agriculture. This center plays a crucial role in supporting digital innovation across these sectors.
Advancements in AI Technologies
The ministry's advances in artificial intelligence have significantly improved operational processes and decision-making capabilities. These technologies are being applied across environmental, water, and agricultural sectors to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
The session featured prominent figures such as Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, along with experts from both the United Nations and Saudi Arabia. Their presence highlighted the global interest in Saudi Arabia's digital transformation efforts.
Saudi Arabia continues to demonstrate its commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable development. The initiatives presented by MEWA reflect a strategic approach towards achieving long-term goals in environmental conservation, resource management, and public health protection.
