Sustainable Agriculture In Saudi Arabia Enhanced By International Cooperation With CGIAR

Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Alfadley has signed a cooperation agreement with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The deal seeks to support agricultural innovation, improve food security and strengthen environmental sustainability in Saudi Arabia. It sets a shared framework for long-term collaboration that aligns with regulations followed by both sides.

Under the agreement, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture will provide $5 million in funding. This support will back joint projects, research activities and capacity-building programmes. The cooperation is designed to supply the technical requirements needed for these activities while staying within the official mandates of the ministry and CGIAR.

Saudi Arabia and CGIAR advance agricultural innovation

The agreement focuses on several cooperation areas linked to national strategies for the agricultural sector. These include contributing to innovation initiatives, joining programmes that build innovation capacity and issuing scientific studies on sustainable water management in Saudi Arabia. It also covers work on a technical roadmap to improve crops and identify digital tools that increase irrigation efficiency.

Another important element is strengthening the Saudi plant gene bank and easing access to local genetic resources. The partners will use Saudi research infrastructure and assets, such as research facilities and experimental lands, for pilot projects. In return, the ministry will gain access to CGIAR infrastructure and resources, including international research centres, to deepen joint research cooperation and improve resource use.

The agreement also provides for international experts and consultants to work in Saudi Arabia. These specialists will help transfer global experience in agricultural innovation, food security and sustainable agriculture. Their role includes advising on new practices, supporting research teams and helping local institutions build skills in modern methods and technologies.

Projects and activities will be carried out under a plan and timeline that define the technical and financial responsibilities of each side. The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture will offer the support and facilitation needed for effective implementation. This cooperation is expected to advance sustainable agricultural development and contribute to the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
