Saudi Arabia Concludes Participation In 68th COPUOS Session, Commits To Sustainable Space Practices
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has wrapped up its involvement in the 68th session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). This event took place at the Vienna International Center. The Saudi delegation comprised members from the Saudi Space Agency (SSA), the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, and the Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office.
Eng. Muryah Alshahrani led the Saudi delegation. During the opening session, he emphasised Saudi Arabia's dedication to fostering global cooperation in space activities. He underscored the significance of collaborative efforts and knowledge sharing to ensure space is used peacefully, responsibly, and sustainably for humanity's future and comprehensive development.

As part of their participation, SSA hosted a side event and workshop titled "Toward a Cleaner Orbit: Advancing Global Cooperation on Space Debris." This event highlighted Saudi Arabia's initiatives to safeguard orbital environments from space debris. It also announced plans for the upcoming Space Debris Conference 2026. Additionally, several awareness campaigns were presented to enhance public understanding of space-related sustainability issues.
The Saudi delegation engaged in numerous bilateral discussions with representatives from other space agencies and member states. These meetings aimed to explore cooperative opportunities and shared interests, thereby expanding international partnerships and strengthening Saudi Arabia's presence in the space sector.
This participation aligns with Saudi Arabia’s continuous efforts to play an active role in shaping the future of space exploration. It also supports principles of peaceful use and sustainable development as outlined in Saudi Vision 2030. The Kingdom aims to enhance its influence in global space initiatives through these engagements.
