Saudi Minister Alfadley Outlines Efforts To Combat Land Degradation
The Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Eng. Abdulrahman Alfadley, recently made significant contributions at the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Special Meeting in Riyadh. Eng. Alfadley took part in a panel session titled "Reviving Earth: Mobilizing for a Restored World," where he shed light on Saudi Arabia's strategic measures to combat land degradation and desertification. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable development within the Kingdom.
Eng. Alfadley outlined Saudi Arabia's multifaceted approach, which includes the launch of ambitious projects like the Saudi Green Initiative, grazing management strategies, and a cloud seeding program aimed at enhancing water resources. He emphasized the importance of protecting land and water resources as a cornerstone of the Kingdom's environmental policy. "Protecting land and water is a key priority for Saudi Arabia," he stated, highlighting the significant strides made through these initiatives.

The session also covered the expansion of vegetation cover, efforts to combat desertification, rehabilitation of agricultural terraces, and improvements in water resource management and waste treatment via a circular economy model. Eng. Alfadley pointed out that these actions are part of Saudi Arabia's commitment to hosting national and regional environmental events, including the inauguration of Environment Week.
Addressing the global challenge of land degradation, Eng. Alfadley discussed its implications on food security, climate change, environmental risks, and biodiversity loss. He underscored the Kingdom's initiatives to draw private-sector investments into land reclamation projects and integrate environmental efforts into corporate social responsibility programs. Notably, he mentioned that 50% of the afforestation targets for the initial phase have been met with the help of private sector contributions.
In his closing remarks, Eng. Alfadley stressed the necessity for enhanced regional and international cooperation to effectively tackle land degradation and drought. He highlighted the launch of the Middle East Green Initiative and the Global Initiative to Reduce Land Degradation under the G20 framework as pivotal steps towards fostering collaboration. Furthermore, he announced that Saudi Arabia will host the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) in December, reinforcing the Kingdom's dedication to leading global efforts in environmental conservation.
These initiatives reflect Saudi Arabia's proactive stance on environmental protection and sustainable development. By mobilizing resources and fostering international collaboration, the Kingdom aims to achieve ambitious goals in reducing land degradation and mitigating drought impacts, thereby contributing to a healthier planet for future generations.
