Saudi Arabia Vows To Slash Carbon Footprint, Eyes Carbon Neutrality By 2060

At the 86th session of the UN Inland Transport Committee, which took place from February 20 to 23, Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser, the Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, delivered a compelling speech that underscored Saudi Arabia's dedication to fostering international cooperation and sustainability within the transport and logistics sector. The session served as a platform for Eng. Al-Jasser to outline the Kingdom's strategic initiatives aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 and significantly reducing CO2 emissions by 278 million tons come 2030, a commitment that aligns with both the Paris Agreement and Saudi Vision 2030.

Eng. Al-Jasser pointed out the transport and logistics sector's substantial contribution to global emissions, with a fifth of the Kingdom's total emissions emanating from this sector alone. He identified land transportation as the primary source of these emissions. This recognition has spurred the launch of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistic Services under the directives of HRH the Crown Prince, which is in harmony with Saudi Arabia's climate action agenda and aims for an ambitious 2% annual reduction in per capita emissions by 2030.

The Minister emphasized the necessity of adopting robust measures to mitigate these issues. Among the strategies highlighted were implementing fuel efficiency standards, enhancing public transportation systems, promoting the adoption of clean vehicle technology, and initiating environmental-friendly practices such as planting trees alongside roads.

Furthermore, Eng. Al-Jasser acknowledged the significance of collaborative efforts and the exchange of knowledge in creating a sustainable and prosperous transport and logistics sector. He stressed the importance of policies that support these goals, highlighting Saudi Arabia's proactive stance in contributing to global sustainability efforts.

The speech delivered by Eng. Al-Jasser at this international forum reflects Saudi Arabia's active role in addressing environmental challenges within the transport and logistics sector. It underscores the Kingdom's commitment to international cooperation, sustainability, and its ambitious goals towards achieving carbon neutrality and reducing emissions in line with global agreements and national visions.
