Saudi Arabia Reaffirms Commitment To Environmental Protection At COP 16 In Colombia
The Saudi delegation took part in the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16) in Kali, Colombia. This event, held from October 21, brought together representatives from 196 countries under the theme "Peace with Nature." The delegation was led by Dr. Mohammad Qurban, CEO of the National Center for Wildlife (NCW).
Saudi Arabia's involvement in COP 16 highlights its strong commitment to global biodiversity preservation. At the conference, the Saudi delegation reiterated their ambitious goal to protect 30% of land and marine areas by 2030. This target aligns with United Nations' biodiversity conservation objectives and showcases Saudi Arabia's proactive approach to conserving natural habitats and addressing climate change challenges.

The Saudi delegation stressed the importance of expanding data sources for biodiversity monitoring. They emphasized that comprehensive and accurate reporting is crucial for strengthening conservation strategies. Additionally, they advocated for better integration of regional efforts with global biodiversity goals and highlighted the need for capacity-building programs in the Arab region focusing on collaborative learning and information exchange.
During COP 16, Saudi Arabia received the prestigious "Green List" certification. This recognition was awarded for achievements at the King Salman Royal Natural Reserve and the Ibex Protected Area. It underscores the Kingdom's dedication to sustainable biodiversity practices and effective ecosystem management.
Reflecting on this recognition, Dr. Qurban stated, "Our participation in COP 16 reaffirms Saudi Arabia's commitment to supporting global biodiversity efforts and advancing the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted at COP 15 in 2022." He added that this framework provides a roadmap for achieving harmony with nature, with a key objective being the protection and restoration of 30% of land and ocean areas by 2030.
Dr. Qurban further commented on Saudi Arabia's dedication to ecosystem protection and biodiversity enhancement in alignment with Vision 2030, the Saudi Green Initiative, and the National Environmental Strategy. He expressed optimism about COP 16's potential to drive meaningful global biodiversity outcomes and inspire innovative solutions contributing to sustainable development.
Showcasing National Initiatives
The Saudi delegation also used this platform to showcase national conservation initiatives. They shared preparations for hosting the 16th Conference of the Parties to Combat Desertification from December 2 to 13, 2024. Delegates extended invitations to their global counterparts and provided insights into conference documents reflecting Saudi Arabia's national priorities.
This participation at COP 16 not only underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment but also sets a precedent for future international collaborations aimed at preserving biodiversity worldwide.
