Saudi Arabia Reaffirms Commitment To Innovation For Sustainable Development And Global Challenges

Dr. Munir Eldesouki, President of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), highlighted the importance of science, technology, and innovation in tackling global issues and promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He made these remarks while leading Saudi Arabia's delegation at the G20 Chief Science Advisers Roundtable (G20-CSAR) in Pretoria, South Africa.

Eldesouki stressed Saudi Arabia's dedication to investing in science and technology as part of its vision to establish a knowledge-based economy. He mentioned significant national initiatives like the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative. These efforts aim to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.

The Kingdom is also focused on generating 50% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. Hosting COP16 on desertification further demonstrates Saudi Arabia's commitment to environmental sustainability. Additionally, the Kingdom hosts the World Bank’s Knowledge Hub to encourage global knowledge exchange.

During his speech, Eldesouki emphasized that science, technology, and innovation are crucial in addressing urgent environmental, social, and economic challenges. Key issues include energy security, desertification, and water scarcity. He reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s ongoing support for international efforts to tackle these problems through inclusive partnerships.

The priorities discussed at this year's G20-CSAR agenda included linking science, technology, and innovation with the SDGs. Other focus areas were enabling a comprehensive energy transition and building an equitable global knowledge system. Strengthening capacities in developing countries was also highlighted as essential for effective decision-making globally.

Eldesouki reiterated Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting international collaborations aimed at addressing global challenges. The Kingdom aims to strengthen partnerships that are inclusive and respectful while advancing the role of science, technology, and innovation in building a shared future.

By focusing on these areas, Saudi Arabia seeks to play a pivotal role in shaping policies that address pressing global issues. The country is dedicated to fostering an environment where scientific advancements contribute significantly to sustainable development worldwide.
