Saudi Arabia Reaffirms Commitment To Global Cooperation For Food Security And Resilient Agricultural Systems
Saudi Arabia is reinforcing its dedication to international cooperation, focusing on building strong and inclusive food systems essential for both global and regional food security. The Kingdom stresses the need for collective efforts to maintain stable agricultural supply chains and transparent multilateral trade. This was highlighted by Abdulrahman Alfadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, at the G20 Agriculture Working Group Ministerial Meeting in South Africa.
Alfadley addressed significant challenges such as natural resource scarcity, climate change, and fluctuating global markets. He emphasized the necessity for integrated strategies to boost agricultural resilience and promote sustainable production methods. Saudi Arabia has made notable progress in its agricultural sector, with total output surpassing 16 million tons in 2024.

The Kingdom's agricultural sector has significantly contributed to the economy, adding approximately $31.5 billion to GDP with a compound annual growth rate exceeding 7% over the past five years. National programs have been implemented to encourage sustainable agricultural development through responsible resource management.
These initiatives include high-efficiency irrigation systems and utilizing geographical diversity for crop distribution. Efforts also focus on improving soil health and fertility while optimizing water management to use renewable water sources in agriculture. These measures have resulted in a 52% reduction in non-renewable water usage within the sector.
Saudi Arabia is investing in rural development, entrepreneurship, and localizing agricultural professions to empower small farmers, productive rural families, women, and youth. The Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development Program (Saudi Reef) has benefited over 80,000 individuals and 50,000 productive families.
The Kingdom has adopted advanced production models for intensive livestock farming, dairy production, poultry projects, and protected vegetable cultivation. These efforts ensure a sustainable transformation in its agricultural systems while promoting innovation and climate-resilient smart farming practices.
Financial Support for Innovation
To further enhance innovation in agriculture, concessional agricultural loans increased to over $1.9 billion in 2024. This financial support aims to boost climate-resilient smart farming practices across the country.
The G20 agriculture working group ministerial meetings are crucial platforms for discussing global food security challenges and sustainable agricultural practices. They foster international cooperation to develop shared strategies addressing pressing agricultural issues worldwide.
Saudi Arabia's commitment to strengthening food systems through international collaboration highlights its proactive approach towards ensuring food security on both regional and global scales.
