Saudi Arabia Enhances Air Connectivity With China Through Strategic Airline Partnership
In a significant move to boost air travel and strengthen bilateral relations, the Saudi Air Connectivity Program (ACP) has partnered with China Eastern Airlines to introduce a new flight route between Saudi Arabia and China. Starting from April 8th, 2024, China Eastern Airlines will operate three weekly flights directly connecting Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) to Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport (RUH). This initiative is set to significantly enhance air connectivity, with the A330-200 aircraft facilitating an annual capacity of 35,880 inbound seats.
This strategic collaboration is in response to the increasing demand for travel between the two countries and is a part of Saudi Arabia's broader efforts to foster deeper ties with China. The introduction of this route is anticipated to promote cultural exchanges and unlock new avenues for economic growth. ACP CEO, Majid Khan, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing its role in connecting key markets and expanding opportunities for tourists and businesses alike.

The launch of this air route is not just a testament to the growing partnership between ACP and China Eastern Airlines but also signifies a step forward in the collaborative efforts between Saudi Arabia and China. This 'Air Silk Road' initiative is expected to facilitate enhanced trade relations, people-to-people exchanges, and sector-wide dialogues.
Aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims at diversifying the economy with a focus on tourism and aviation, the Kingdom aspires to position itself as a leading aviation hub in the Middle East. The achievement of attracting 100 million tourists in 2023, seven years ahead of its target, underscores the success of its strategic initiatives. With new goals set for 2030, Saudi Arabia aims to welcome 150 million tourists, including 70 million foreign visitors.
The ACP operates under the Ministry of Tourism of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with an objective to improve air connectivity from unserved and underserved markets globally. By integrating tourism and aviation sectors, ACP endeavors to realize the National Tourism Strategy’s vision and establish Saudi Arabia as a global leader in tourism air connectivity.
