Saudi Arabia Recognized As Leader In Protecting Migratory Wildlife

The National Center for Wildlife Development, representing Saudi Arabia, has been honored with the champion title for its exceptional efforts in conserving migratory species. This prestigious recognition was bestowed during the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP14), which took place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from February 12 to 17, 2024. The conference's theme, 'Nature knows no borders', underscored the global nature of wildlife conservation efforts.

The Kingdom's delegation played a significant role at the conference, participating in both the high-level and the 54th meetings of the Standing Committee of the Treaty on February 11, 2024. This award highlights Saudi Arabia's leadership in spearheading initiatives to combat illegal hunting, taking, and trafficking of migratory species across Southwest Asia for the period 2024-2026.

Saudi Arabia Wins Wildlife Conservation Award

A member of the Kingdom's delegation was selected to represent Asia in the negotiating committee, showcasing the country's active involvement and commitment to international conservation efforts. Additionally, several specialists from the delegation contributed to various task forces focused on birds, marine species, and terrestrial species.

Dr. Mohammed Ali Qurban, CEO of the National Center for Wildlife Development, expressed his gratitude for this international recognition. He remarked that this award mirrors the extensive efforts made by Saudi Arabia to safeguard wildlife and maintain biodiversity. Dr. Qurban highlighted that these endeavors not only reinforce Saudi Arabia's pioneering role in environmental conservation but also support regional and international initiatives aimed at preserving natural habitats.

During CMS COP14, critical issues such as habitat conservation and restoration were discussed alongside threats like overexploitation, habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. The conference also served as a platform for launching significant reports and guidelines, including the inaugural State of the World's Migratory Species report, new global guidelines on light pollution, and best practices for infrastructure impacting migratory species.

The Kingdom's approach to wildlife conservation is marked by a comprehensive system of measures initiated with the introduction of a new national environmental strategy. This strategy encompasses regulation of hunting activities, establishment of protected species lists, enforcement through special environmental forces, automation of regulatory processes, and promotion of ecological awareness through quality educational programs.

This accolade from CMS COP14 not only acknowledges Saudi Arabia's dedication to environmental stewardship but also emphasizes its role as a leader in global biodiversity conservation efforts.
