Saudi Arabia Commemorates Flag Day: Honouring National Unity And Growth Through Its Flag

Saudi Arabia observes Flag Day on March 11, marking the approval of the national flag by King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud on 27 Dhul-Hijjah 1355 AH. This day highlights the flag's significance, symbolising unity, justice, and prosperity. The flag has been a witness to Saudi Arabia's history since its founding in 1139 AH (1727 AD), embodying national pride and dignity.

The Saudi flag features the Shahada at its centre, representing peace and Islam. Below it is a sword symbolising strength and dignity. This design reflects the nation's values and historical roots. The flag's evolution began with the First Saudi State's green silk banner inscribed with the Shahada. Later, King Abdulaziz added two crossed swords, which were eventually replaced by a single sword beneath the Shahada.

The current flag design was finalised when King Abdulaziz accepted a proposal from the Shura Council. The sword was placed under the Shahada, giving the flag its present form. The Saudi Flag bylaw of 1393 AH / 1973 AD specifies that the flag be rectangular with a width two-thirds of its length. It is green with white inscriptions and a sword visible on both sides.

The green colour signifies growth and prosperity, while white represents peace and purity. The sword stands for justice and security, rooted in Arab heritage. Islamic monotheism affirms Allah's oneness and adherence to Islamic Sharia, reflecting the nation's foundation through its historical stages.

The Saudi flag is unique globally due to its special characteristics that command respect. It is never flown at half-mast during mourning nor used as a trademark or for promotional purposes that could undermine its dignity. The flag is not wrapped around deceased leaders' bodies or lowered to honour guests during reviews.

Within Saudi Arabia, the national flag flies over government buildings and public institutions. It also represents the country at diplomatic missions abroad, even during official holidays. This practice underscores its importance as a symbol of state strength, sovereignty, and national unity.

Significance of Flag Day

Recognising the profound meaning of the national flag, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud declared March 11 as "Flag Day." This Royal Decree issued on Sha'ban 9, 1444 AH celebrates the flag's role in manifesting Saudi identity and unity.

The national flag embodies timeless values of unity, love, loyalty, belonging, and allegiance to leadership and nationhood. Its design elements carry deep meanings: green for growth; white for peace; and the sword for justice rooted in nobility. These symbols reflect Saudi Arabia's commitment to Islamic principles.
