Saudi Arabia Dominates GCC Car Market With Significant Imports In 2022-2023

The Saudi Arabian automotive sector has solidified its position as a dominant force within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, capturing more than half of the region's car sales. This achievement ranks the Kingdom among the top 20 global car markets, underscoring its significant role in the international automotive industry. Recent data from the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) underscores this trend, with over 160,000 cars imported into Saudi Arabia during the 2022-2023 period. Specifically, the Kingdom saw an influx of 93,199 cars in 2023 and 66,870 vehicles in 2022.

According to ZATCA Spokesperson Hamoud Al-Harbi, the primary sources of these imports include Japan, India, the Republic of Korea, the United States, and Thailand. These countries have been pivotal in supplying the Saudi market with a diverse range of automobiles over the past two years. Concurrently, ensuring vehicular safety remains a top priority for Saudi authorities. The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has been at the forefront of this initiative, conducting rigorous inspections on 60,473 vehicles in 2023 to guarantee adherence to the highest technical and safety standards.

Eng. Wael Al-Dhiyab, speaking on behalf of SASO, highlighted the organization's dedication to maintaining strict quality and safety standards for tires, a critical component for road safety. In 2023 alone, SASO issued 18,150 energy efficiency certificates for tire products. This effort is part of a broader commitment to enhance energy efficiency and support economic development through improved product safety standards.

One notable trend identified by SASO is the significant increase in electric vehicle (EV) adoption. The organization reported a remarkable 465% rise in certificates of conformity for electric vehicles in 2023 compared to the previous year. This surge reflects SASO's crucial role in facilitating Saudi Arabia's transition towards clean energy solutions. Additionally, SASO's issuance of 1,505 fuel efficiency labels for new light vehicles further underscores its commitment to promoting sustainable automotive practices.

The data presented by ZATCA and SASO not only highlights Saudi Arabia's growing influence in the global car market but also illustrates the Kingdom's proactive approach to ensuring road safety and embracing clean energy technologies.
