Saudi Arabia Calls For Enhanced Global Collaboration To Tackle Food Security Issues

Saudi Arabia is calling for stronger global collaboration to tackle the escalating food crisis. Despite adequate food production worldwide, millions still face hunger and malnutrition. This appeal was made by Abdulrahman Alfadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, at the G20 Agriculture Ministers' Meeting in South Africa. He emphasised the need for enhanced governance and strategic planning to ensure global food security.

Alfadley outlined several critical actions needed to address this issue. These include fortifying local food systems and improving access to affordable, nutritious food. He also stressed the importance of better information-sharing to enhance transparency and developing early warning systems for quick crisis response.

Saudi Arabia Urges Action on Food Security

The minister highlighted the necessity of maintaining reliable food reserves and stable markets. Ensuring uninterrupted supply chains during emergencies is crucial, alongside reducing food loss and waste in line with sustainability goals. Alfadley also advocated for responsible agricultural investment and balanced consumption patterns.

He called for a fair global trading system under World Trade Organization rules to prevent restrictive trade measures on food commodities. This approach aims to secure a transparent trading environment that supports global food security efforts.

Saudi Arabia is actively prioritising its food security sector. The establishment of a General Food Security Authority aims to strengthen strategic reserves of essential commodities. Additionally, the Kingdom has developed an integrated early warning system, unique in the Middle East and North Africa, to predict and respond to threats effectively.

The Kingdom has achieved a 16% reduction in food loss and waste over five years through national policies and initiatives. This success reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to enhancing its domestic food security measures.

Global Humanitarian Efforts

On a global scale, Saudi Arabia contributes through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief). KSrelief has launched over 1,000 food security programs across 82 countries worldwide, demonstrating its commitment to addressing global hunger challenges.

The minister's speech underscores the urgent need for international cooperation in securing global food supplies. By implementing these strategies, Saudi Arabia aims to play a pivotal role in mitigating the global food crisis while enhancing its domestic resilience against future threats.
