Saudi Arabia And Azerbaijan Forge Ahead With Enhanced Energy Cooperation

In a significant move to bolster their historic ties and explore new avenues for cooperation, HRH Prince Abdulaziz Bin Salman, Minister of Energy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and H.E. Mr. Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, convened to discuss the future of their collaboration in the energy sector. This meeting underscored both nations' commitment to enhancing the sustainability and stability of oil markets, with a keen focus on facilitating an orderly global energy transition and addressing climate change ambitiously.

The discussions between Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan have led to a joint statement emphasizing their ongoing cooperation within the frameworks of the OPEC Plus Declaration of Cooperation and the Charter of Cooperation between Oil Producing Countries. This collaboration aims to support global oil market stability, benefiting both producer and consumer countries while fostering sustainable economic growth.

Both countries have expressed a strong commitment to advancing international cooperation in climate action. This includes adhering to the objectives, principles, and goals of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Paris Agreement. The agreement allows for a tailored approach to climate action, reflecting the unique national circumstances and strategies of each country.

Looking ahead to COP29, Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan are set on achieving successful outcomes that reflect their shared vision for ambitious, balanced, and inclusive climate action. This vision respects the principles of equity and acknowledges the differentiated responsibilities and capabilities of nations in light of their distinct national circumstances.

The partnership also extends into renewable energy, where both sides have noted promising developments, particularly highlighting Saudi Arabia's significant investment in wind power in Azerbaijan. This venture stands as one of Azerbaijan's largest foreign investments in renewable energy, showcasing the depth of bilateral cooperation in this vital sector.

Moreover, discussions have touched upon enhancing cooperation in electricity and renewable energy through knowledge exchange and joint development projects. The dialogue also covered potential joint investment opportunities in oil, gas, refined products, petrochemicals, and energy efficiency fields.

Another critical area of collaboration is the development and exchange of knowledge on low-emission fuels and technologies. This includes Lower Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF) and Hydrogen-based Synthetic Aviation Fuel (e-fuel), aiming at introducing efficient fuels that reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly.

The meeting concluded with both parties commending the outcomes of the third Joint Technical Committee meeting. This session was marked by constructive dialogue that enhanced mutual understanding and offered a comprehensive review of the energy-related aspects of their bilateral relations across various fields.
