Saudi Arabia's Air Traffic Soars To New Heights In 2023 With Record Passenger Numbers

The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has recently shared insights into the Kingdom's air transport sector for 2023, highlighting a significant upturn in its performance. According to their latest report, passenger traffic soared to an all-time high of 112 million, marking a 26% increase from 2022 and surpassing pre-pandemic figures by over 8%. This achievement is a testament to the sector's robust recovery following the global COVID-19 pandemic downturn.

Further analysis of GACA's air traffic performance report indicates a notable rise in flight activity across the Kingdom. The year 2023 saw approximately 815,000 flight movements, up by 16% from the previous year. International travel, in particular, experienced a remarkable surge, with passenger numbers reaching around 61 million and flight movements topping 394,000. Among the country's airports, King Abdulaziz International Airport stood out as the busiest, averaging 30 flights per hour. It was closely followed by Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport and King Fahd International Airport, with 27 and 11 flights per hour respectively.

Saudi Air Traffic Peaks in 2023

Domestic travel also showed positive growth, with passenger volume on domestic routes hitting 51 million. This was supported by over 421,000 domestic flights across Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the air cargo sector witnessed a steady increase of more than 7% in 2023, with total volumes exceeding 918,000 tons.

GACA plays a pivotal role as the regulatory body for Saudi Arabia's air transport sector. Its responsibilities encompass establishing and overseeing executive regulations, collaborating with relevant authorities, and enhancing the quality of air travel services. The authority is committed to fostering a competitive and attractive investment environment within the sector.

Looking ahead, GACA aims to reinforce Saudi Arabia's stature as a leading regional and global air travel hub. This ambition aligns with Vision 2030's strategic goals, which include doubling the air transport capacity by the end of the decade. The authority's efforts are geared towards not only recovering from past challenges but also setting new benchmarks for success in the aviation industry.
