Saudi Arabia's Rising Stars In AI Innovation Showcase At KAUST Symposium 2025

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is playing a pivotal role in shaping Saudi Arabia's position in artificial intelligence (AI). This mission was highlighted during the Rising Stars in AI Symposium 2025. The event brought together talented early-career individuals for discussions, fostering new ideas and collaborations. KAUST's commitment to AI research is evident through such initiatives.

The symposium served as a platform for KAUST researchers to present their innovative work in generative AI, machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. Professor Bernard Ghanem, chair of the Center of Excellence for Generative AI, noted that the event attracted rising stars who recognise KAUST as a key player in AI research. He emphasised its importance for knowledge exchange and collaboration.

Rising Stars in AI at KAUST Symposium

Gianluca Setti, dean of the Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Sciences and Engineering (CEMSE) Division at KAUST, highlighted Saudi Arabia's rapid growth in AI. He pointed out the country's leadership in empowering women and creating jobs within the sector. Setti stressed the significant role of KAUST and its Generative AI Center in these advancements.

The symposium also provided an opportunity for KAUST to recruit researchers and faculty members. According to Ghanem, past editions have successfully attracted talent to the university. The event showcased KAUST as a global leader in AI innovation, drawing attention from around the world.

Dr. Vijay Prakash Dwivedi from Stanford University found the symposium invaluable for engaging with peers and exploring collaborations. His presentation focused on transformers for graph structural data. The event allowed participants to witness KAUST’s vision and capabilities firsthand.

Postdoctoral fellow Dr. Andrés Villa shared his team's work on improving instructional AI systems' accuracy in interpreting visual information. He mentioned that discussions at the symposium directly benefited his research efforts.

Industry Partnerships

This year's symposium expanded to include industry partners from across Saudi Arabia. It concluded with KAUST signing a memorandum of understanding with Tawuniya, the largest insurance company in the Middle East and North Africa. This agreement aims to enhance research collaboration between academia and industry.

KAUST President Sir Edward Byrne AC expressed the university's dedication to fostering an environment where ideas thrive and discoveries are made. "KAUST is deeply committed to building an environment where ideas flourish, discoveries emerge, and impact is achieved," he stated at the symposium.

The Rising Stars in AI Symposium 2025 underscored KAUST's role as a hub for transformative AI research both locally and globally. By bringing together bright minds, it reinforced Saudi Arabia’s essential contribution to this critical field.
