Saudi Arabia Addresses Labor Market Challenges: GLMC Report Insights
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has made significant strides in tackling labor market challenges and enhancing workforce skills, as highlighted in the first annual report by the Global Labor Market Conference (GLMC). Organised by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development last year, this progress aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goals. These goals focus on developing national talents, improving workforce requalification, and reducing unemployment rates.
The report underscored the profound changes affecting global labor markets, including economic globalization, demographic shifts, and technological advancements. It stressed that continuous learning and skill development are crucial for adapting to these transformations. The Kingdom's commitment to workforce development is evident through its focus on economic diversification and creating new job opportunities.

Saudi Vision 2030 aims to enhance the global competitiveness of the Saudi workforce. This involves building a sustainable labor market that can adapt to rapid changes while achieving sustained economic prosperity. The report emphasized initiatives supporting young job seekers by improving education and training programs. These efforts aim to bridge the gap between academic qualifications and market demands.
According to the report, over half of the 14,000 participants from 14 countries expressed concerns about their current skills becoming obsolete soon. This highlights an urgent need for skill development to keep pace with rapid labor market changes. Increasing automation poses a threat to many countries' labor markets, raising awareness about skill enhancement's importance.
The impact of demographic changes varies across nations. Some participants noted that an aging population drives skill enhancement efforts in certain countries. However, this influence was less evident in motivating skill development initiatives elsewhere. The report highlighted cognitive, managerial, social, emotional skills, and STEM skills as essential for success in technology-driven labor markets.
Cognitive skills like critical analysis, problem-solving, and innovative thinking are deemed most crucial now and in the future. The second annual GLMC is scheduled for January 29-30, 2025, in Riyadh. It will gather over 5,000 participants globally, including more than 200 prominent speakers such as labor ministers from 40 countries.
Upcoming Global Labor Market Conference
The conference will feature chief executives, international experts, and public-sector leaders from over 50 countries discussing key challenges and opportunities in the global labor market. This gathering aims to address pressing issues while exploring potential solutions for a rapidly changing world.
The Kingdom's dedication to addressing labor-market challenges aligns with its broader vision for economic growth and sustainability. By focusing on skill enhancement and workforce requalification, Saudi Arabia positions itself as a leader capable of effectively tackling both local and global challenges.
