Saudi Arabia Planning To Build World's Tallest Tower With UK-Based Firm: Report
Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) is working with UK-based Foster & Partners on the design of a proposed 2-kilometre-high megatall tower in Riyadh, according to a report in Architects’ Journal. This ambitious project is set to redefine the skyline, not only of Riyadh but of the world, by becoming more than twice as tall as the 828-metre Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which was completed in 2010 and currently holds the title of the world's tallest building.
The proposed tower will not only surpass the height of the Burj Khalifa but will also become Foster + Partners' tallest design to date, quadrupling the height of their 423m-tall JPMorgan Chase World Headquarters at 270 Park Avenue, New York. This will also mark a significant milestone for Riyadh, making it the city's tallest structure and surpassing the height of the PIF Tower, which is designed by HOK and local architecture and engineering firm Omrania, standing at 385 metres.
The megatall tower will be situated in close proximity to King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
Rising Ambitions in Saudi Architecture
The Kingdom is witnessing an architectural renaissance, with numerous mega-projects underway. These include The Line, Trojena, Oxagon and Mukaab Tower, all of which are part of the nation's Vision 2030 plan to transform into a renewable energy-powered region. Among these, the Riyadh Tower is poised to set a new benchmark for architectural achievements on a global scale.
Foster + Partners' involvement in Saudi Arabia's transformation does not end with this tower. The firm is also leading the massive expansion of the King Salman International Airport. After winning the competition for this development, which covers an area of 57km², in late 2022, Foster + Partners is now designing at least three airports across the kingdom.
Moreover, Saudi Arabia has been collaborating with other British architects for its NEOM project, a $500 billion smart city initiative. This includes partnerships with architects such as Peter Cook, Zaha Hadid Architects, and David Adjaye. Zaha Hadid Architects is working on the Discovery Tower project for Trojena, a year-round tourist destination featuring a ski village and ultra-luxury resorts. The Oxagon project aims to establish a port and logistics hub, further underlining the ambitious architectural and infrastructure plans under Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.
With several renowned international design names, including Foster + Partners and SOM, vying for the opportunity to contribute to Saudi Arabia's mega-tall project, the architectural landscape of the country is on the brink of a monumental transformation. The proposed 2km-high tower in Riyadh, alongside the kingdom's other mega-projects, signals a new era of innovation and ambition in Saudi architecture, aiming to place the nation at the forefront of global architectural achievements.
