SALA Showcases Sharjah’s Initiatives To Promote Arabic Language In Western Academia
The "Arabic Language and Culture Festival" in Milan, Italy, organised by the Institute of Arab Culture at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and sponsored by the Sharjah Book Authority, highlighted Sharjah's dedication to promoting Arabic language globally. The event showcased efforts to enhance Arabic studies in Western academia.
During a panel titled "Efforts of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah to Support Arabic in the West," Mohamed Safi Al Mosteghanemi, Secretary-General of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, emphasised that Arabic serves as a bridge for intercultural dialogue. He noted its significance among native speakers and scholars in Asia and Europe.

Al Mosteghanemi discussed the "Language Immersion" initiative launched under His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi's guidance. This programme invites academic delegations from countries like Austria, Poland, and Italy to experience Sharjah’s cultural environment, enhancing their linguistic skills beyond traditional classroom settings.
The festival also explored how Arabic language and culture are perceived in Western contexts. Topics included teaching Arabic to non-native speakers, updating grammar curricula, exploring Arab literature abroad, translation issues, and how these relate to identity and cultural integration.
The "Comprehensive Arabic Encyclopedia" project was another highlight. Overseen by the Academy, it reflects Sharjah’s vision of promoting Arabic as a medium for knowledge exchange across nations. This initiative underscores the emirate’s commitment to fostering human connection through language.
Al Mosteghanemi outlined five key foundations for mastering Arabic. The first is continuous reading to broaden knowledge. Second is engaging with "instrumental sciences" like grammar and rhetoric for analytical skills. A skilled teacher who inspires love for the language is third.
Essential Elements of Language Mastery
Memorisation plays a crucial role in learning Arabic. Al Mosteghanemi cited Quranic verses, prophetic sayings, classical poetry, and proverbs as essential elements. Systematic training through regular sessions forms the fifth foundation, allowing learners to practice in real-life situations.
The festival underscored Sharjah’s scientific and cultural initiatives aimed at enriching Arabic studies at international universities. These efforts contribute significantly to establishing Arabic's global standing as a cherished language among scholars worldwide.
