Elena Rybakina Edges Ons Jabeur In Thrilling Three-Set Match At Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open
Ons Jabeur's journey at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open ended in the quarter-finals for the second year running. She lost a thrilling match to defending champion Elena Rybakina. Rybakina now advances to the semi-finals alongside Belinda Bencic, Ashlyn Krueger, and Linda Noskova. The match between Jabeur and Rybakina was their sixth encounter and lived up to expectations with both players showcasing their skills.
In the opening quarter-final of the day, Belinda Bencic faced Marketa Vondrousova. This match was a repeat of their 2020 Tokyo Olympics final clash, where Bencic had won gold. Bencic reached the last eight after a dominant win over Veronika Kudermetova, not dropping a single game. However, her encounter with Vondrousova proved more challenging.

The contest between Jabeur and Rybakina was intense, with both players having moments of dominance. Rybakina started strong, winning the first set comfortably. Jabeur fought back to take the second set, setting up a decisive third set. Despite breaking Rybakina's serve at 3-2, Jabeur couldn't maintain her lead as Rybakina eventually won in a tie-break.
Bencic's match against Vondrousova featured 11 breaks of serve, indicating a disrupted rhythm throughout. Despite this, Bencic managed to edge ahead early in the contest and held on to claim the first set 7-5. Her controlled performance in the second set secured her a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Ashlyn Krueger made headlines by defeating Leylah Fernandez in a three-set thriller to reach her first WTA 500 semi-final. Krueger displayed impressive power and technique throughout the match. She fired eight aces in total, five of which came in the opening set that she won 7-5.
Fernandez responded well despite committing seven double faults during the match. She managed to take the second set but couldn't keep up with Krueger's momentum in the third set. Krueger eventually triumphed with scores of 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
Doubles Action Heats Up
In doubles action, Jelena Ostapenko and Ellen Perez advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Timea Babos and Nicole Melichar-Martinez with scores of 6-4, 6-4. Ostapenko had earlier been eliminated from singles by Jabeur but found success alongside Perez in doubles.
Elsewhere in doubles competition, Kristina Mladenovic and Zhang Shuai overcame Heather Watson and Luisa Stefani by winning a decisive tie-break 10-3. They will face Olivia Gadecki and Olivia Nicholls next.
Semi-Final Showdowns Await
The upcoming semi-finals promise exciting clashes as players vie for spots in Saturday's final. Rybakina aims to defend her title from last year while Bencic seeks another triumph following her success earlier this year at Zayed Sports City.
The battle between Krueger and Noskova is particularly intriguing given their recent performances against top opponents like Kasatkina, Badosa, Fernandez, and Linette.
