Russia Marks 70 Years Since Launch Of World's First Nuclear Power Plant

Russia commemorated the 70th anniversary of the world's first nuclear power plant (NPP) with events in Obninsk, Kaluga region. President Vladimir Putin extended his congratulations to both current and former employees of Rosatom State Corporation and participants in the celebrations.

"The launch of the Obninsk NPP marked a significant milestone in the history of civilian nuclear technology, paving the way for the development of the nuclear power industry in our country and beyond its borders," said President Putin. He highlighted that this event was crucial for advancing nuclear technology globally.

President Putin also noted, "Over these years, our national nuclear sector has made tremendous progress, with advanced nuclear technologies now creating new opportunities in energy, medicine, in the harmonious development of Arctic territories, our national space programme and in other fields. Moreover, the nuclear sector plays a crucial role in maintaining nuclear parity and enhancing the defence capability of our state."

Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev remarked on the historical importance of Obninsk NPP: "The Obninsk NPP marks the start of the world nuclear energy industry. The projects of those years laid the foundation for entire areas that are still the basis for our work, including large and SMR-based NPPs, ship reactors, medical isotopes, and new materials."

Likhachev further elaborated on future goals: "Today we are looking to new atomic breakthroughs such as the world’s first Gen IV energy unit with closed fuel cycle at the turn of the 30s, transition to a fundamentally different type of energy production – thermonuclear fusion."

Historical Context

The Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant began operations on June 26, 1954. It remained functional until it was decommissioned in 2002. This plant is recognised as a pivotal point in nuclear energy history.

The celebration underscored Russia's ongoing commitment to advancing nuclear technology. The achievements since Obninsk's inception have significantly impacted various sectors including energy and medicine.

The event highlighted how foundational projects from decades ago continue to influence modern advancements. The focus remains on innovative developments like Generation IV reactors and thermonuclear fusion.
