RTA Opens New Bridge Connecting Hessa Street To Al Khail Road To Improve Traffic Flow
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has inaugurated a significant two-lane bridge stretching 1,000 metres. This bridge aims to improve traffic flow from Hessa Street to Al Khail Road. It reduces travel time from 15 minutes to just 3 minutes, ensuring a smooth connection to Dubai’s city centre and Dubai International Airport.
The Hessa Street development project is progressing well, with 54% already completed. This project includes upgrading four major intersections and is expected to be fully operational by the fourth quarter of 2025. The initiative is part of efforts to enhance road infrastructure in line with Dubai's growth.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, stated that the project spans 4.5 km from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road. It is being executed under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and monitored by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The project involves upgrading four key intersections along Hessa Street: Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Road, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road. Additionally, Hessa Street will be widened from two lanes to four lanes in each direction, doubling its capacity to accommodate up to 8,000 vehicles per hour.
Al Tayer elaborated that this development is crucial for enhancing Dubai's road network. By 2030, the population in areas served by this project is expected to exceed 640,000 residents. The project's completion will double Hessa Street's capacity from 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
Apart from road enhancements, a 13.5 km cycling track is being constructed as part of the project. This track will improve connectivity and promote sustainable mobility by linking several residential areas with commercial hubs and metro stations.
Detailed Intersection Developments
The first intersection involves constructing a two-lane directional ramp at Hessa Street and Sheikh Zayed Road. This ramp will facilitate right-turn traffic onto Hessa Street heading east toward Emirates Road.
The second intersection at First Al Khail Road will see an increase in lanes on the existing bridge from three to four in each direction. Surface-level junction improvements are also planned for better traffic flow.
At the third intersection with Asayel Streets, the current bridge will be widened from two lanes to four in each direction along Hessa Street. Upgrades at the surface-level signalised intersection aim to enhance traffic movement.
Cycling and Scooter Infrastructure
The fourth intersection at Al Khail Road includes constructing a two-lane direct ramp for seamless traffic flow northbound toward Sharjah. The cycling track connects Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills via Hessa Street, serving areas like Al Barsha and Barsha Heights.
A notable feature of the cycling track is two architecturally distinctive bridges for cyclists and pedestrians over Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. Each bridge measures five metres wide with designated paths for cyclists and pedestrians.
This development enhances first and last-mile journeys by providing easy access to key metro stations and nearby destinations. The track can accommodate up to 5,200 users per hour efficiently serving both residents and visitors alike.
