RTA Raises Speed Limits On Al Amardi And Sheikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Streets For Improved Traffic Flow
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the Dubai Police General HQ have announced changes to speed limits on Al Amardi Street and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Street. Starting 30th September 2024, the maximum speed limit on Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street will be 100 km/h between Dubai Al Ain Road and Academic City Roundabout. Between Academic City Roundabout and Al Khawaneej Street, it will be set at 90 km/h.
The speed limit on Al Amardi Street will also be standardised to 90 km/h between Al Khawaneej Street and Emirates Road. These adjustments are part of a coordinated effort with Dubai Police General HQ to enhance traffic flow and safety. The decision follows an extensive engineering study conducted by the RTA over recent months.

The speed changes align with top engineering standards found in technical manuals for road design and speed management. These updates are part of regular reviews of speed limits on key roads in Dubai. The RTA uses the Dubai Speed Management Manual, which incorporates global best practices for setting optimal speed limits.
This manual considers factors like road design speed, actual speeds driven by most motorists (85th percentile), urban development levels, pedestrian activity, and other facilities nearby. It also examines traffic accident rates and road usage volume to ensure balanced traffic flow and reduced incidents.
Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street has seen several upgrades, including an overpass at Dubai Al Ain Road. All overpasses on this street are expected to be completed by 2030, allowing for a consistent 100 km/h speed limit throughout. Meanwhile, Al Amardi Street has been expanded with new service roads.
The roundabout at Al Khawaneej Street has been converted into a signal-controlled intersection, improving both traffic flow and safety. These developments have increased lanes and enhanced intersections along these streets.
Implementation of New Speed Limits
The RTA plans to update traffic signs and road markings indicating the new maximum speeds on Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street and Al Amardi Street. This will adhere to the highest approved traffic safety standards in preparation for the changes effective from 30th September 2024.
These modifications aim to improve road safety while maintaining efficient traffic movement across these vital routes in Dubai. By adhering to unified engineering standards, the RTA ensures that these roads meet quality benchmarks for safe driving conditions.
