RTA Completes 595 Bus Shelters To Improve Public Transport Experience In Dubai
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed 595 public bus passenger shelters. This is part of a larger initiative to establish 762 shelters across key areas in Dubai. These shelters boast a modern design and offer various services to improve the experience for public transport users. The project is now 89% complete across all phases.
The new shelters are strategically located to serve numerous bus routes, with some accommodating over ten routes per shelter. They cater to more than 192 million passengers annually, enhancing the efficiency of the bus network and reducing travel times.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, stated that these shelters are crucial in developing an integrated urban environment. "The new shelters represent a pivotal step in RTA’s efforts to develop an integrated urban environment that encourages residents and visitors to use public transport, improves quality of life, and promotes comfort and well-being," he said.
Al Tayer emphasised the importance of combining modern design with practical services in these shelters. "We were keen to ensure that the new shelters combine modern and aesthetic design with services that guarantee a better mobility experience," he added. This approach aims to boost public confidence in the transport network while supporting sustainability goals like emissions reduction.
The locations for these new shelters were carefully chosen based on several factors. Al Tayer noted that they were selected to meet the needs of high-density urban areas and address both current and future operational requirements for public bus services. This ensures integration with soft mobility options, further enhancing the appeal of public transport.
The RTA's commitment extends beyond just building shelters; it focuses on providing safe, comfortable facilities that align with Dubai's growing population and urban expansion needs. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to encourage more residents and visitors to opt for public transport.
This comprehensive project not only aims at improving convenience but also at fostering a sustainable urban environment by reducing reliance on private vehicles. As Dubai continues to grow, such initiatives play a vital role in shaping its future transportation landscape.
