RTA Completes 40% Of Nol Digital Payment System Upgrade For Enhanced Public Transport In Dubai

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai is advancing its ticketing system, with 40% of the nol system upgrade completed. This shift from a card-based to an account-based ticketing (ABT) system aims for completion by the end of Q3 2026. The project, costing AED550 million, is divided into three phases to ensure smooth implementation.

In the first phase, RTA will enhance the central system to create digital accounts linked to existing nol cards. The second phase will introduce a new generation of nol cards featuring advanced technologies that meet international standards. These cards will be compatible with banking card technologies, ensuring seamless integration.

RTA Upgrades nol Digital Payment System by 40%

The final phase will complete the system upgrade, allowing alternative payment methods like bank cards and digital wallets for public transport fares in Dubai. This comprehensive approach ensures a smooth transition to modern payment solutions for commuters across the city.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, highlighted several benefits of the upgraded nol system. Users can create digital accounts linked to their nol cards and add these cards to smartphone wallets. Ticket purchases via QR code technology through digital channels will also be possible.

Al Tayer explained that users could manage their accounts by linking family members' nol cards and controlling settings like top-up amounts for each card. Automatic balance top-ups can be activated by connecting accounts to banking services. Additionally, users can view daily transaction statements and suspend cards when necessary.

Enhanced Payment Technologies

The upgrade involves updating systems, devices, and smart kiosks at public transport stations. This enhancement supports new payment technologies such as QR code ticketing, next-generation nol cards, facial recognition, fingerprint authentication, bank cards, and digital wallets.

The upgraded system extends beyond public transport use. Nol cards will facilitate purchases across digital platforms and retail outlets in the UAE, similar to how bank cards function. This expansion offers greater convenience for users in various transactions.

By modernising its ticketing infrastructure, RTA aims to provide a more flexible fare concept across public transport services in Dubai. The initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing user experience through innovative technology solutions.
