RTA Awards Contract To Widen Bridge Leading To Terminal 1 Of Dubai International Airport
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Airports have initiated a project to upgrade the bridge leading to Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport. This development is set to improve traffic flow, reduce travel times, and enhance the overall experience for passengers. The airport saw over 92 million travellers in 2024, necessitating these improvements.
The bridge expansion will increase its capacity from 4,200 to 5,600 vehicles per hour, marking a 33% rise. The project includes widening the existing bridge from three to four lanes by constructing a new bridge using steel box girders integrated with a composite concrete slab. This method ensures high structural efficiency and quick delivery without disrupting traffic on Airport Street.

In addition to expanding the bridge, the project involves road pavement improvements, infrastructure service upgrades, and landscaping works. These enhancements aim to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding infrastructure. New street lighting will also be installed to boost safety and visibility for drivers.
The total length of the bridge, including its ramps, is 171 metres, with the main span extending nearly 70 metres. This expansion is part of RTA's ongoing efforts to improve connectivity between major corridors and vital facilities like Dubai International Airport.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of RTA's Board of Executive Directors, emphasised RTA’s dedication to enhancing Dubai’s road infrastructure. He stated: "The bridge expansion is part of RTA’s continuous efforts to improve traffic flow and strengthen connectivity between major corridors and vital facilities."
Al Tayer highlighted that the project aligns with RTA’s mission to provide sustainable mobility solutions that facilitate movement for residents and visitors alike. These efforts are crucial in maintaining Dubai's status as a global hub for international events.
Previous Developments on Airport Street
Recently, RTA completed an upgrade on Airport Street from its intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Casablanca Street. This included building bridges and tunnels at Al Rashidiya and intersections with Casablanca Street, Marrakech Street, and Nad Al Hamar Street.
The project also delivered a single-lane bridge offering direct access to Terminal 3 without stopping at signalised intersections. Additionally, another bridge leads to the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects complex while providing an alternative route for vehicles from Al Garhoud directly accessing Terminals 1 and 3.
This comprehensive approach ensures smoother traffic flow towards key areas within Dubai International Airport. The expansion of Casablanca Street from three to four lanes towards Al Garhoud Bridge further supports this goal by easing congestion during peak hours.
