RTA Awards AED 696 Million Contract To Enhance Trade Centre Roundabout Traffic Flow In Dubai
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated a significant project at the Trade Centre Roundabout, a crucial junction in Dubai. This intersection links Sheikh Zayed Road with five major streets: Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, Sheikh Rashid Street, 2nd December Street, Zabeel Palace Street, and Al Mustaqbal Street. The project is valued at AED696.414 million.
The development involves constructing five bridges totalling 5,000 metres and transforming the current roundabout into a surface intersection. This change aims to enhance traffic flow from Sheikh Zayed Road to 2nd December Street and from Al Mustaqbal Street to Sheikh Zayed Road. Additionally, it will allow seamless traffic movement from 2nd December Street towards Al Majles Street and further to Al Mustaqbal Street.

The project includes building a two-lane bridge on the upper level, stretching 1,000 metres from Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street towards Deira. This bridge will accommodate up to 3,000 vehicles per hour. Furthermore, two two-lane bridges extending 2,000 metres will link Sheikh Rashid Street with 2nd December Street, supporting 6,000 vehicles per hour.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, explained that this initiative is part of a larger development plan. "The Trade Centre Roundabout Development Project is part of a broader development plan that also includes the Al Mustaqbal Street Development Project, which will be awarded this November," he stated.
This project serves important areas such as the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), which hosts major events like GITEX and Arabian Travel Market. It also benefits the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), a leading financial hub in the region. Communities like Zabeel, Al Satwa, Karama, Jafiliya, and Mankhool will also see improvements.
Al Tayer highlighted that these developments would double the intersection's capacity and reduce delay times significantly. The travel time from Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street will decrease from six minutes to just one minute.
Concurrent Projects
The DWTC Roundabout Development Project coincides with another road enhancement effort in the area. RTA has recently awarded a contract for developing Oud Metha and Al Asayel Streets. This project involves upgrading four major intersections and constructing bridges spanning 4,300 metres along with roads extending over 14 km.
This concurrent project aims to serve residential areas expected to house over 420,000 people by 2030. It is anticipated to cut travel time from 20 minutes to five minutes while improving traffic flow by 75 percent.
Additionally, all phases of the Al Khail Road Development Project are now open. This includes building bridges extending 3,300 metres and widening lanes across various locations along Al Khail Road. These enhancements are projected to reduce travel time by 30 percent and increase intersection capacity by approximately 19,600 vehicles per hour.
