RTA Implements LiDAR And Digital Twin Technology To Enhance Road Asset Management In Dubai
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is now using LiDAR technology to improve road asset assessments. This advanced tool enhances data accuracy for digital twin platforms, aiding in the development of maintenance strategies. The initiative highlights RTA's commitment to integrating smart technologies for better road management, ensuring sustainability and safety across Dubai.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, stated, "LiDAR technology delivers a remarkable boost in performance and speed, delivering up to 300% compared to traditional visual inspections. Such advancement reflects RTA’s dedication to accelerating digital transformation and leveraging cutting-edge technologies to enhance the quality of Dubai’s road infrastructure while safeguarding its efficiency, resilience, and long-term sustainability. The initiative aligns with the leadership’s vision of positioning Dubai as a smart and sustainable city worldwide."

Al Banna further explained that LiDAR provides superior accuracy in assessing road assets, achieving up to 95% precision compared to older methods. This improvement enhances data quality, enabling more informed maintenance decisions. The technology also allows safe inspections of elevated structures like lighting poles and traffic signals, reducing risks linked with manual checks.
The daily assessment capability of LiDAR extends up to 80 km of roads, marking a 96% improvement over traditional methods that cover only 3 km. This ensures continuous monitoring without disrupting traffic flow. With a sensing range reaching 80 metres, it offers comprehensive coverage of various road assets.
Al Banna added that this technology supports the long-term sustainability of the Assets Condition Index (ACI) by providing detailed analysis of asset conditions. It aids in precise scheduling of maintenance activities, especially predictive maintenance, helping prioritise interventions based on strategic criteria.
The adoption of LiDAR technology by RTA represents a significant step towards enhancing Dubai's road infrastructure. By facilitating accurate data collection and analysis, it supports efficient maintenance planning and reinforces the operational efficiency of the city's roads.
