RSC Summit Showcases KFSHRC's Leadership In Robotic Surgery And Transplantation Innovations
The Robotic Surgery Collaboration (RSC) Summit took place in Riyadh from December 4 to 6, gathering international and local surgical experts. The event aimed to enhance collaboration, training, and the future of complex robotic surgeries through live surgical demonstrations and scientific discussions. The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) showcased six simultaneous advanced robotic procedures in transplantation and cancer surgeries involving the esophagus, stomach, and pancreas during the summit's opening.
During the same session, KFSHRC's thoracic surgery team at the Organ Transplant Center of Excellence (OTCoE) performed an esophageal cancer resection using a single-port robotic technique for the first time in the Middle East. This approach minimized incision size and reduced surgical trauma. Dr. Peter Grimminger from the University Medical Center at Mainz, Germany, noted on LinkedIn that no other hospital currently offers this combination of advanced robotic procedures.

Over the next two days, the summit shifted to structured scientific exchanges. Sessions focused on colorectal and upper gastrointestinal surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, bariatric surgery, hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery, and transplantation. Discussions also covered surgical education and curriculum design, patient safety innovations, as well as updates on single-port surgery and next-generation robotic platforms.
The meeting concluded by linking clinical innovation with system readiness. It highlighted the need for training, safety frameworks, and technology planning as robotics becomes central to future operating room models. International consensus recommendations on remote robotic surgery were presented, offering a roadmap for how the field should evolve in coming years.
Professor Dieter Broering, local chair of the summit and OTCoE executive director, emphasized KFSHRC’s rapid progress in advanced robotic surgery. He attributed this momentum to sustained government support that has accelerated capabilities and clinical pathways while focusing on patient outcomes. Broering stressed that robotic surgery should be viewed through a value-based healthcare lens.
He added that robotic surgery is becoming a core pillar of future operating room strategies. This demands system-level planning with payers and health leaders to align procurement, workforce training and development, outcomes measurement, and care models with next-generation surgery.
Future Plans for KFSHRC
KFSHRC reaffirmed its commitment through OTCoE to advance robotic transplant and cancer surgery via continued innovation and rigorous training. Building on RSC Summit Riyadh 2025's momentum, the hospital aims to strengthen capacity further. It plans to expand expertise while translating cutting-edge technology into safer care for patients.
KFSHRC ranks first in the Middle East and North Africa region among academic medical centers globally for 2025. It holds Saudi Arabia's highest-valued healthcare brand according to Brand Finance 2025. Newsweek lists it among World’s Best Hospitals for 2025 and World’s Best Smart Hospitals for 2026.
