Royal Commission For AlUla Launches Nature Champions Programme To Enhance Environmental Stewardship

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has initiated a community-focused program aimed at promoting environmental care. Launched in February 2023, this initiative has created a group of residents known as "nature champions." These individuals play an active role in preserving AlUla County's unique natural environment. The program aligns with RCU’s sustainability objectives, the Saudi Green Initiative, and Vision 2030.

Dr. Stephen Browne, RCU Wildlife and Natural Heritage VP, highlighted the program's impact: "Environmental outreach is building awareness and a deeper understanding of nature in communities in or near the six vast nature reserves that RCU is establishing – Sharaan, Al Gharameel, Wadi Nakhlah, Harrat Alzabin, Harrat Uwayrid and Harrat Khaybar. By strengthening the bonds between RCU and the community, this program is unlocking AlUla’s potential as an extraordinary, sustainable location for residents and visitors."

AlUla's Nature Champions Promote Sustainability

Over two years, the initiative achieved three significant outcomes. It cultivated a knowledgeable group of Nature Champions who lead activities to enhance understanding and protection of AlUla’s nature reserves. Additionally, it raised awareness about the importance of these reserves among nearby communities, emphasizing reducing grazing and hunting pressures.

The program also enhanced knowledge about the reserves among teachers and students in these areas. Activities included workshops, household waste audits, reserve visits, and interactive school sessions. These efforts reached over 3,519 community members.

Residents were inspired to integrate sustainable practices into their daily routines. This included composting, recycling, and reducing plastic use. Such actions contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle within the community.

The Nature Champions program not only fosters environmental responsibility but also strengthens ties between RCU and local communities. This initiative positions AlUla as a model for sustainable living for both residents and visitors alike.
