Royal Commission For AlUla And National Archaeological Museum Of Naples Forge Cultural Partnership
The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has established a strategic alliance with the National Archaeological Museum of Naples to present artefacts in Saudi Arabia and AlUla for the first time. This collaboration is part of RCU's network of cultural partnerships, which includes institutions from the UK, France, China, and Italy. These partnerships focus on preserving and celebrating AlUla's rich 20,000-year-old heritage.
In May 2023, Saudi Arabia and Italy signed a governmental agreement to enhance cultural preservation and knowledge sharing. This partnership builds on that agreement by facilitating collaborative projects across AlUla’s cultural landscapes. Teams from both RCU and the museum are working together to integrate these efforts, focusing on knowledge sharing and skill development.

The National Archaeological Museum of Naples, founded in 1777, is a significant landmark in Italy's heritage scene. It houses some of Europe's most valued cultural artefacts, including Roman and Greek statues, bronze pieces, mosaics, and other artworks. The new agreement allows for transferring select artefacts from Naples to AlUla in northwest Saudi Arabia.
The exhibition will showcase 15 artefacts from historical sites like Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Rome. It will be a key feature of the Ancient Kingdoms Festival 2024 in AlUla from November 7 to 30. Additionally, an international archaeology symposium will be held during the festival for visitors to engage with.
Last year, heritage narrators from AlUla visited Naples to gain insights into the museum’s collections. This visit was part of a broader initiative to foster understanding between the two regions. The partnership includes a comprehensive program aimed at collaborative projects across AlUla’s cultural landscapes.
This strategic partnership aims to facilitate opportunities for capacity building and skill development on both sides. By integrating these efforts, both RCU and the museum hope to enhance their respective cultural preservation initiatives.
This collaboration marks a significant step in showcasing masterpieces from one of Italy's most renowned museums in Saudi Arabia. It highlights the importance of international cooperation in preserving and celebrating global heritage.
