Royal Commission For AlUla Commemorates International Arabian Leopard Day With Conservation Initiatives

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has announced the 2025 International Arabian Leopard Day, highlighting efforts to protect this endangered species. Celebrated annually on 10 February, the day raises awareness about conservation work by RCU and partners like the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which lists the Arabian Leopard as critically endangered.

Reflecting on past achievements, RCU celebrated milestones such as the birth of "Hope," the first cub in 2021, followed by seven more cubs in 2023 and a rare set of triplets in 2024. These events have fueled optimism and inspired annual campaigns aimed at preserving this majestic species.

This year's campaign, "Leaps of Hope," celebrates these triplets and highlights progress at the Arabian Leopard Conservation Breeding Centre. The initiative encourages global participation by inviting the public to name three cubs born at the centre, fostering a deeper connection with their unique traits.

As part of International Arabian Leopard Day activities, RCU organised community-focused events like the Arabian Leopard Day Walk. This event aims to raise awareness and unite efforts to support leopard conservation. Additionally, RCU launched an inter-school football tournament to promote sports and environmental consciousness among students.

The Arabian Leopard Fund introduced the "Arabian Leopard Story" workshop for schools. This programme educates children about the leopard's ecological role and its cultural significance in Saudi Arabia, Oman, and UAE. Through storytelling and interactive activities, students learn about habitat challenges and how they can aid conservation efforts.

In a significant development, RCU announced a partnership with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) during an event at London Zoo. Discussions focused on regenerative tourism and wildlife conservation strategies. Princess Reema bint Bandar Al Saud, founder of Catmosphere, attended alongside Philip Jones, RCU’s Chief Tourism Officer, and ZSL representatives.

Strategic Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation

This collaboration with ZSL aims to enhance knowledge exchange and develop effective conservation strategies. It also focuses on monitoring reintroduced species to maintain ecosystem balance. Such partnerships are crucial for ensuring long-term stability in wildlife habitats.

The ongoing initiatives by RCU demonstrate a strong commitment to safeguarding the Arabian Leopard's future. By engaging communities globally through education and strategic collaborations, there is hope that these majestic creatures will thrive once again in their natural habitats.
